When it comes to picking out a really great gift, there are two basic strategies.
Strategy number one is what I’m going to call the “bullseye” method. It’s pretty simple: Think of what the person likes and then give just exactly what they would buy for themselves – right down to the make, model, and color.
If they’re a golfer, you could get them some fancy golf club they really want. If they like a specific band, you could get them a concert poster from a classic tour – that sort of thing.
And, If you’re shopping for a great gift for the coffee lover in your life, you get them a bottle of Jot Ultra Coffee. Duh. It’s the very tip-top of home coffee making methods, a liquid coffee concentrate that’s twice the potency of espresso, but with all the rich, fresh-brewed taste of the very best coffees in the world.
But I digress.
Great gift-giving has an element of surprise.
If it’s not your first time giving a gift to this person, the bullseye method can be trouble. They pretty much always know what to expect from you. It dulls the element of surprise.
And, if you use it too often, you put yourself in a position of having to one-up your gift from the year before...every single year. If your gift-getter has an expensive hobby, you are going to find yourself in big trouble real fast.
Worst of all, it runs the risk of becoming boring. If you’re looking for a gift for a coffee aficionado and you just buy them another bag of coffee or a subscription to a coffee-of-the-month club, sure they’ll use the gift, but I bet – deep down – they’ll feel like you phoned it in.
Although...just to put it out there, if they haven’t tried Jot Ultra Coffee concentrate yet...I honestly can’t think of a better gift for a coffee lover. Jot’s revolutionary liquid coffee concentrate creates an entirely new home coffee-making experience, elevating any drink – from an iced oat milk latte to a caramel macchiato to a good-old-fashioned black cup of joe – to barista-level heights of deliciousness...in seconds.
But, again, I digress.
How to raise your gift-giving game.
For the people you’re closest to, the ones for whom you’ve hit the gifting bullseye one too many times, we recommend switching to a second gift-giving strategy, the “passion-adjacent” method.
For this method, you think of what the person likes and then you gift them something related that’s not quite in the same ballpark. More like in the next ballpark over.
Are they obsessed with their dog? Maybe you get them a warm sweater to wear on their early-morning walks. Do they like yoga? Maybe they’d also like a meditation cushion.
This method is killer because it lets you give your gift and then say charming and endearing things like, “I was thinking about how you like [insert hobby/sport/activity/preference here], and so I got you this,” or “I saw this and thought of you.” Boom. Now not only are you generous, but thoughtful too. That, my friend, scores you big big points.
